Call Before You Dig

Safety First: Always Contact 811 Before You Dig!

At Roughrider Electric Cooperative, your safety is our highest priority. If you’re planning any digging or excavation work, it’s essential to know where underground utilities are located. Striking buried service lines can be dangerous and disruptive, so take the simple step that helps prevent accidents: call before you dig.

North Dakota’s 811 “Call Before You Dig” Service

North Dakota makes locating underground utilities quick and convenient with its statewide 811 number. Just dial 811 at least three business days before starting your project. This free service ensures that utility lines are marked in advance, helping you protect yourself, your property, and your community.

How It Works:

  1. One Call to 811: Give a call to 811, and a knowledgeable representative will be available to assist you 24/7. Whether it's day or night, weekends or holidays, you can access this service anytime you need it.
  2. Provide Location Details: Be prepared with the precise location of your dig. Share the exact street address, directions, and suffixes (such as lane, street, or drive). If you're in a rural area, provide the township, range, section, and quarter section details.
  3. Description of Work: Inform the representative about the type of work you plan to do and provide some specific details about the exact location on the site where the excavation will occur.
  4. Compliance with State Law: To ensure compliance with state regulations, remember to plan your start date and time for excavation at least 72 hours in advance, excluding weekends and holidays.

Why Calling 811 Matters

Reaching out to 811 before beginning any digging project is required by federal law and plays a vital role in keeping you safe. It helps prevent accidental contact with buried utility lines so that an event that can cause injuries, service outages, or costly damage does not happen. By making this call, you’re taking a simple step that protects you, your property, and your community.

Utilities Underground Location Center (811)
